401K Management and other service fees

Hi Jeremy,

I opted for my company’s 401k plan and I see high quarterly management and other service fees charged to my account.
Is it possible to open 401k account on a different platform and ask my company to transfer my contribution to the account ?

The short answer is no. You’re basically stuck with whatever your employer provides until you leave the company (I think there’s an exception if you’re 55+ or something).

That said, the fees do suck, you could try to petition your HR department to do better for their employees, but otherwise you just hold your nose and deal with it. As soon as you leave the company you do a rollover to lower fee IRA with Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, etc. :slight_smile:

Nope. By law, contributions to a 401k have to come from payroll deduction. But you can open a separate IRA with lower fees. That’s why we prioritize accounts like this:
