Happy to be a part of the group!
So I came across the “buy a house in Italy for 1 euro” deal and knew there’d be a catch, but still, I started to look into it. The catch is that you have to agree to renovate it within 3 years (it varies by local government). From what I’m reading a renovation in Italy costs 5-30k euros.
Then I started just looking at properties in general in Italy. A good website is idealista.it
if you check any location and sort by cheapest you’ll find shockingly cheap houses (5-30k euros).
I wondered, for the right type of person, if this kind of plan could fit within ones FIRE plan. Like, upon achieving FI, you work another few months and use that money to buy one of these houses in cash and eventually fix it up as a FIRE project. Then, especially for the FIRE nomad types, you have a home base in Europe for part of the year, summers perhaps.
From my research so far, property taxes are very low and US citizens are permitted to do this. You can stay 90 days for every 180 day period as a US citizen.
Anyone else think this is a cool idea? Thanks
