More of a personal question. But I tend to find myself in the middle of having the mindset of invest now for the future AND go ahead and spend some money while I’m young and have fun. I absolutely love your page! Look at It constantly and have learned a TON! but I also notice that you REALLY believe in what you say in regards to “live below your means”. I know all to well how short life can be and how it can be taken from you at any moment and my question to you is do you ever get the feeling where you want to splurge a bit now? You are extremely successful and young. I know going on a very expensive vacation to Greece, or buying a nice car, or getting a bigger house are all purchases that will lower your net worth and could all be money invested for when you’re older. But like my uncle used to tell me, “Ya can’t take it with ya!”
Well, I basically think the meaning of life is to be happy and help people. And I try to make my use of money reflect maximizing those things in my own life.
I think MOST people are LESS happy because they DON’T live below their means. That new car gives you a very short term endorphin boost when you drive it off the lot. But a month later when you’re stuck in traffic on the way to a job you hate just to make payments on the car, you haven’t really achieved more happiness. Since I think this applies to more people than not, I talk about living below your means so you’re happier now for having a plan and happier later for not being broke.
But for sure, life isn’t about dying with the most zeroes in your bank account. Being a hermit for 50 years to wake up at 70 years old and be rich isn’t what I’m suggesting. But also, don’t conflate spending with happiness.
So to your point, I think it’s great to think about when can you actually convert money to happiness. And focus your money on those (surprisingly few) opportunities so long as you’re not living beyond your means… which will bring less happiness!
So yeah. If you can afford to go to Greece, go for it!
Wow great stuff! It’s great to always hear a different perspective on life. I tend to agree with everything you just said. And you’re right, to me I think the most important thing is to enjoy what you do. I see almost everyone working a 9-5 that they absolutely hate. Thanks a lot for the different perspective
