Some of your advice (rightly) ends with “consult a CPA for actual tax advice”. So… the next question obviously is… what is your advice for finding one?

I’ve had a good one and a bad one in my life. And having a good one is nice.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s any magic answer to this question. Ask successful friends for a recommendation? Check out yelp or Google reviews? Find three that look solid and meet with each of them for an free consultation and see which of them make the most sense for your situation? It might even be helpful to try to talk to some of their clients (maybe you can contact those who left a review for some off-the-record feedback, etc).
