I feel like a moron even asking this question. But I always see Instagram posts with Jeremy talking about how much investing $250 a month into S&P will grow in 40 years. My question is, if the S&P is $450 (just coming up with a number), how do you just invest $250? Wouldn’t I have to buy a full share? TIA!
The S&P 500 is a fund and with funds you can buy fractions of shares. So if the share price is $500 you purchase a half share for $250.
I’ve tried to do this and it still wants me trade with whole shares…
Are you US Based? Also make sure you’re on mutual funds and not ETF/Stocks
yes I’m US based. I looked it up and Vanguard doesn’t do fractional shares. bummer!
Are you sure you’re trying to buy the mutual fund and not ETF? What ticker symbol are you using?
I use VOO. that’s an ETF right? if I open up VFIAX I can do fractional?
Yes VOO is the ETF. VFIAX is the mutual fund. You don’t need to “open anything up” just buy in the same account as VOO. Just click trade mutual funds rather than ETF.
oh wow! Thank you so much for your help!!
No worries. Happy to help.
