What are your thoughts on investing with the STASH app?
Hey Jill!
I haven’t used it personally, but looking through their documentation I would say it’s not my favorite. Here are some reasons:
- Fees: If you want to open a Roth IRA you’re on the hook for at least $3/month (plus any expenses of underlying investments)
- Stock picking: It looks like it aims user toward picking individual stocks and ETFs. I believe stock picking hurts investors long term performance and is adding unnecessary complexity, especially for beginning investors.
There are some other sites I like more. Vanguard, Fidelity and Schwab are more traditional low-cost brokerages that offer target date index funds (and pretty much everything else) at very low fees.
If you want a snazzy new app, I’d prefer a site like Betterment or Acorns that automates the investment picks for you.
That said, if the choice is between STASH and not investing, STASH is WAY BETTER. My above critiques are more like “small details”. The important part is investing early and often!
Jeremy
Thanks so much for the advise. So Roth IRA’s are the way to go! Should one invest Aggressively or ? And any particular copy? BlackRock? And are they great if one is saving for retirement
